Quarto d’Altino and the Roman settlements

Near to the Ca’ Maffio guest house is Quarto d'Altino, formerly the site of Altinum, the foremost town of the many Roman trading settlements that flourished in the Upper Adriatic area from the 2nd century BC onwards following the construction of the ancient Via Annia. This area crossed by the River Sile was already populated in pre-Roman times by the ancient Veneti and now holds the extraordinary archaeological legacy of Quarto d’Altino, the Roman Altinum: the Museo Archeologico Nazionale displays finds from the Roman necropoli, everyday artefacts and grave goods.

The inhabitants of Altinum fled from the barbarian invasions and played a key role in founding Altinum and populating nearby Burano, Murano and Torcello, the lagoon islands where the lace-making and glass-making industries later developed.
