Eternally fascinating Venice
A few kilometres from the peace of the Ca’ Maffio guest house, nestling between the beaches of the Adriatic sea and its lagoon, you will find Venice.A unique city both in terms of its topography and, above all, its incomparable artistic and architectural legacy, Venice has long been one of the world’s most attractive tourist destinations. Here history, art and culture have mingled over the centuries coming together to create a jewel of a city. But the most magical spot of all is St Mark’s Square, the city’s historic and artistic heart defined by Napoleon as the “finest drawing room in Europe”.
Here you will find St Mark’s Basilica with its Byzantine treasures, the Gothic Ducal Palace - former seat of the Doge, the imposing campanile of St Mark’s offering a splendid view of the city and surrounding lagoon, the recently restored clock tower (now open to the public), the historic cafés under the arcades, and the Bridge of Sighs from which condemned prisoners could cast one last longing glance at the city before being shut up in the dungeons.
But Venice is more than just St Mark’s Square. Every corner of the city speaks of the glorious artistic and cultural past of the Most Serene Republic, formerly undisputed ruler of the seas.
Walking around Venice means being seduced by its fascinating views, losing yourself in the labyrinth of calli and campielli, discovering the hidden art treasures in its churches and museums, admiring the splendid palazzi lining the Grand Canal, shopping on the Rialto Bridge or venturing into the picturesque fish market. Last but not least make sure you drop by in one of the popular bacari to drink a glass of wine and nibble a delicious cicheto or enjoy one of the specialities of a city where land, sea and the lagoon have co-existed for centuries.
